Why I Got Hair Extensions and Why I Love Them

I’ve been wanting hair extensions for YEARS! I just couldn’t ever take the plunge for whatever reason. But when my stylist, Emily, at Reserved Salon said her new stylist, Taylor, were going to offer hand-tied extensions, I was sold!

Hand-tied extensions are all the rage right now. They cause the least amount of damage to your hair of all the different types of extensions. I’ve seen several other bloggers say they have actually seen their natural hair improve with these extensions! There is no glue, they are simply sewn into your hair at the scalp by way of tiny beads attached to small sections of hair that hold the thread in place.

I’m sure you’re wondering why I wanted to get extensions. To start, I LOVE having long hair! I think I look best with long hair, I like styling long hair, and while I was able to grow my hair out pretty well, it was never thick. Once it got to a certain length, it would just look a little thin and, scraggily, for lack of a better word (is that even a word?). So, I would always end up cutting it to make it look thicker, and grow it, and cut it, and well you get the idea. Extensions have allowed me to have length and thickness, and I am so happy with that! Check out these before and afters:

Why did these come out sideways??? No idea…but you get the idea!!!

How long does it take?

It took about 2 hours to install my extensions. Taylor was very efficient! I have heard people say it can take up to 6 hours. And that may be true if you are doing a lot of color with your extensions. We picked out a color ahead of time that would match my hair pretty well and we did not have to do much coloring at all!

Sideways again? If someone knows how to fix this please let me know!

What length are they?

I got the 16 inch Bellami extensions. I think it’s the perfect length if you want the thickness, but still want your hair to be a natural length. There is a 20 inch option that I may try in the future, but for my first time, I am so happy I got this length. It’s very easy to work with and style and I don’t feel overwhelmed with too much hair.

What is the upkeep like?

You have to go back every 8-10 weeks to have the extension moved up. They will grow out as your hair grows, so getting them moved up is necessary.

As far as washing and upkeep at home…I wash about once every 5-7 days. It just depends on how many times I’ve worked out, how many styling products I’ve used, etc. I use my normal shampoo and conditioner. It does take a lot longer to blow dry, but since I don’t have to wash as often, it’s ok! I use a wet brush only so that I don’t tug on the beads too much when brushing.

How much do they cost?

Hand-tied extensions are an investment. But I have to say that Reserved Salon’s pricing is super competitive and I highly recommend using them to anyone who is looking to get, or keep, hand-tied extensions.
